Magnier Wins Bidding Duel For Sadler's Wells Colt

Coolmore Stud's John Magnier outbid Sheikh Mohammed to acquire a Sadler's Wells colt for 2,000,000 guineas (about $3,045,000) to top Wednesday's session of the Tattersalls Houghton Sale in Newmarket, England.

The session topper, produced from La Papagena, is the first yearling ever sold by Lord Howard de Walden's Plantation Stud and was the sixth-highest price paid for a yearling ever sold in Europe, according to the sales company.

Tattersalls reported the session average rose 35% over the comparable session one year ago and exceeded 200,0000 guineas for the second straight day. The session median of 150,000 guineas was up 25% over the 1999 comparable session.

Wednesday's second-highest price of 775,000 guineas was paid by Magnier for a Gone West colt produced form Vodafone Oaks winner Lady Carla.
