Grade II Winner Bella Chiarra Retired

Jack Mandato's homebred Bella Chiarra has been retired because of a broken splint bone. The injury was discovered following the 5-year-old mare's last place effort in the Sept. 23 Kentucky Cup Ladies Turf Handicap at Kentucky Downs.

Bella Chiarra (Phone Trick -- Bannockburn, by Count Brook) won nine of 29 starts and earned $636,088. Her three stakes wins -- all in 2000 -- included a victory in the Rampart Handicap (gr. II), and she also placed in eight added-money races during her career.

Bella Chiarra has arrived at Arthur Hancock's Stone Farm near Paris, Ky., where Mandato boards Bannockburn. No decision has been reached as to a mate for Bella Chiarra. Bannockburn is in foal to Menifee.
