Gary and Mary West's Dollar Bill rebounded from a 10th-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) to win the $218,800 Brown and Williamson Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) by 1 1/4 lengths Saturday on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs. Racing on an off track for the first time, the 2-year-old son of Peaks and Valleys completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:47.18.Carrying 111 pounds including jockey Calvin Borel, Dollar Bill saved ground through most of the race before swinging wide for the stretch run. Dollar Bill dueled through the lane with Holiday Thunder, who took the lead on the second turn, before drawing off in the final sixteenth-mile. Laurel Futurity (gr. III) runner-up Gift of the Eagle was third, followed by Unbridled Time, Vroom Vroom, and pacesetter Percy Hope."He's the type of horse that you have to ride the whole time, but I like him because he can get the distance," said Borel. "I don't know what it was but he didn't fire in the Breeders' Cup (when ridden by Richard Migliore), but he has been working out good and he's worked out good in the mud."Dollar Bill earned $135,656 for the win, his second in five starts. The Dallas Stewart-trained colt earned his maiden win at Saratoga in his second career race. Since then, he finished second to Arabian Light in the Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (gr. II) prior to his Breeders' Cup run."He ran great in his first race, and his second," said Stewart. Then he got left leaving the gate at Keeneland and finished second. In the Breeders' Cup, I don't know what happened. We were concerned that he didn't like running on this track but you have to have faith. I'm going to take him to New Orleans and run him through their 3-year-old series."The second choice in the wagering, Dollar Bill paid $6.60, $3.20 and $2.20. 6-5 favorite Holiday Thunder returned $2.60 and $2.20. Gift of the Eagle paid $2.60 to show as the top three betting choices all hit the board.
