"Commendable is a big, good-looking horse that has a fascinating pedigree, He is by Gone West and out of a mare (Bought Twice) by In Reality. His bloodlines combine the tremendous success his family has in producing stallions by the Mr. Prospector line (Fappiano, Quiet American) and the In Reality line (Honour and Glory)."
Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Commendable has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Dr. and Mrs. John Chandler's Mill Ridge Farm near Lexington. He will stand for a syndicate for $15,000 live foal.A son of Mill Ridge stallion Gone West, Commendable charged through the Belmont stretch the afternoon of June 10 to win the "Test of the Champion" by 1 1/2 lengths over Aptitude, with Unshaded running third. Commendable also placed in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) and Super Derby XXI (gr. I) later that year. In two fourth-place finishes in the spring, he finished a length behind War Chant in the San Rafael Stakes (gr. II) and 3 3/4 lengths behind Fusaichi Pegasus in the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II). He won two of 12 starts and earned $907,470 for owners Robert and Beverly Lewis."Commendable is a great combination of pedigree and racing ability," Alice Chandler said. "Not only is he a Belmont winner, but he also distinguished himself in his last start, a good second behind Tiznow in the Super Derby.
