Jocks' Race to the Wire
Jerry Bailey, winning the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf aboard Perfect Sting, is in a race with Pat Day for leading rider honors.
With a month to go in the 2000 racing season, less than $50,000 in purse earnings separates this year's top two jockeys, Pat Day and Jerry Bailey. According to Equibase figures through Sunday, Day's earnings total $17,395,963, followed closely by Bailey with $17,348,245. It is a long way back to Shane Sellers, in third with $14,639,828. With a paucity of big-purse races remaining, it is likely the riding race will go to the wire. Day also leads Bailey by number of wins -- 267 to 245 -- but Bailey has the better success rate as he has been successful with 27.3% of his 899 mounts this year, compared with Day's 22.1% win percentage from 1,209 rides.
