The Tattersalls December Mares Sale, Europe's leading breeding stock sale, got underway at Park Paddocks in Newmarket, England on Monday. The sales company reported the average was up 5% to 33,502 guineas on the corresponding day last year and the median rose 11% to 21,000 guineas, with the day's trade grossing 6,398,900 guineas.Top priced lot for the day was Lot 1516, the three year old filly Peneia, who was purchased by Barbara Facchino's Barouche Stud in Ireland for 370,000 guineas. The daughter of Nureyev is out of Piquetnol, an own-sister to group 1 Coronation Stakes and Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Chimes of Freedom and also the dam of highly rated Storm Cat two year old filly Dietrich. Plans are to send the filly to recently retired champion Giant's Causeway. Barouche Stud were in the news two months earlier when the Barathea colt they consigned to the Tattersalls Houghton Yearling Sale sold for 875,000 guineas.Two lots later the A.P. Indy filly Wind Silence was purchased by Anthony Stroud Bloodstock for 300,000 guineas. The three-year-old filly is a daughter of the stakes winning Wild Planet and was purchased by Stroud on behalf of U.S. based clients who are increasing their involvement in bloodstock.
The third highest priced lot for the day was Lot 1509, the seven year old mare Reveuse de Jou,r who was purchased by Alex Scrope for 215,000 guineas with a covering by classic sire Mtoto. By the champion stallion Sadler's Wells, she is out of the group 1 Coronation Stakes winning Magic of Life, whose Seeking the Gold filly Enthused won this year's group 2 Lowther Stakes and is a leading contender for next year's One Thousand Guineas.For further information please see the Tattersalls Website at www.tattersalls.com
