Greg Brent, racing secretary at Golden Gate and Bay Meadows, said the late April date for the race would coincide with the Kilroe Mile on March 3 at Santa Anita and the Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park the last weekend in May.Another stakes switch between Bay Meadows and Golden Gate has the El Camino Derby being relocated for its renewal march 10. One of Bay Meadows top races in the past, the Triple Crown prep will be run at Golden Gate.
The San Francisco Mile, a grade II race run at Golden Gate Field since 1948 (except for two cancellations), will be run at Bay Meadows next year as part of a restructuring of racing in northern California.The highest graded race run in the northern part of the state, the San Fran Mile will likely be run on the final weekend of April. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the race was moved as a result of changes made in the northern California racing calendar by Magna Entertainment, which owns both Golden Gate and Bay Meadows.Previously, Golden Gate meets ran from mid-November through mid-January and from mid-march to late June. Bay Meadows raced from mid-January to mid-March and from Labor Day weekend to mid-November. Now, Golden Gate's meet has been extended to April 1, with Bay Meadows hosting short meets before and after the summer fair meets.
