Multiple Graded Stakes Winner Smooth Player Retired

Smooth Player, a multiple graded stakes winning mare, has been retired due to a strained suspensory, according to trainer Dan Hendricks. The California-bred daughter of Bertrando will be shipped to Kentucky to be bred to an as yet undetermined stallion.

Smooth Player won eight of 19 career races including three grade II stakes –- the Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup and Las Palmas Handicaps, as well as the Hollywood Oaks. She also finished second in three graded stakes, including the Del Mar Oaks (gr. IT), and won two restricted stakes.

A 4-year-old filly, Smooth Player won graded stakes on both dirt and turf and earned $760,496 in her career. In her final start, Smooth Player finished second in the Dahlia Handicap (gr. IIT) for trainer Dan Hendricks and breeder-owners Martin J. Wygod and John Spohler

Smooth Player is out of Shy Pirate, by Pirate's Bounty.
