Collect Call rallied in the stretch to win the $109,300 Santa Ysabel Stakes (gr. III) by 1 1/4 lengths over Irguns Angel Saturday at Santa Anita. Alex Solis booted the winner home, the pair crossed the wire after completing 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.69 on a fast track.
"She ran like I was hoping," said Solis. "She's steady, she's been running in shorter and she stays the same pace. She was running good with good horses and I said, when she goes long she's going to be a way better horse. She proved it today."
Eminent finished third in the eight-horse field, 1 ½ lengths ahead of 19-10 favorite Tricky Elaine. Pet Sounds came home fifth, followed by Next Level, Sheza Niner, and Skywriting.
Collect Call returned $17.80, $9.20, and $5.80. Irguns Angel paid $10.20 and $6.40. Eminent was worth $4.20 to show. The $1 exacta returned $70.60.
Collect Call (Meadowlake -- Negative Pledge, by Alleged) won a $30,000 stakes in her racing debut when trained by Martin Sidney but was winless in three subsequent starts prior to the Santa Ysabel. The 3-year-old filly was purchased by Rod Rodriguez for $250,000 at the Marshall Naify dispersal sale in Washington and is currently trained by Christopher Paasch. Collect Call's Santa Ysabel win marks the first stakes win for both her owner and trainer. She was bred in Kentucky by Marshall Naify Revocable Trust. She earned $65,580 for the win, her second in five starts.
"We haven't decided where she'll run next," said Paasch. "We'll sit down over the next couple of weeks and try and find a spring schedule for her, because I do think she will improve with the distance." (Chart, Equibase
