Five thoroughbred tracks called off their cards Sunday because of the second major snowstorm to hit the Northeast this season. Racing was closed at Aqueduct in New York, Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., Laurel outside Baltimore, Philadelphia Park and at Suffolk Downs near Boston. This was the third straight day -- and 10th time this winter -- Turfway had to call off racing because of bad weather. Philadelphia Park also scratched its card for Monday. The New York Racing Association said Sunday's card at Aqueduct will be run Wednesday. Turfway, near Cincinnati, closed after the second race Friday night when jockeys said the track was unsafe. They balked again Saturday. The track's management decided to use Sunday to allow maintenance crews to prepare the surface for racing. Turfway is dark on Mondays and Tuesdays.
A foot of snow fell in eastern Pennsylvania. Parts of New Jersey and the Washington area received 10 inches of snow.
