Racing fans throughout the United States appear to be skeptical that the winner of Kentucky Derby 127 is among the 23 individual horses listed as wagering interests in Pool 1 of Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Those fans have made the mutuel field, which includes all 3-year- olds other than those 23 individual horses, a heavy favorite at the mid-point of first of three four-day pools in the 2001 Kentucky Derby Future Wager. At the close of Friday's second day of Pool 1, the mutuel field was an odds-on favorite at 4-5. The Thoroughbred Corp's Point Given, winner of the Hollywood Futurity and runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, was the distant second choice at 8-1 and A P Valentine, owned by the Celtic Pride Stable of basketball coach Rick Pitino, was next at 11-1.
A record two-day total of $134,131 had been wagered on Pool 1 at outlets in 28 states when betting was halted Friday evening at 11:00 p.m. (EST) - including $90,813 wagered on Friday alone. Of the overall total, $57,523 had been wagered on the mutuel field. The previous two-day Pool 1 record was the $128,771 wagered last year. Other notable Kentucky Derby Future Wager odds at the mid-point of Pool 1 include 18-1 on Dollar Bill and 22-1 on both Street Cry and Monarchos. The latter made a significant move after being listed at 35-1 after the first day of the pool. The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, now in its third year, allows racing fans to place wagers on contenders for the Kentucky Derby weeks in advance at odds that may be more attractive than those they would receive on Derby Day. The Kentucky Derby Future Wager is a $2 minimum wager and is a win bet only. The Future Wager's Pool 1 will close on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 4:30 p.m. (EST). Pool 2 is scheduled for March 8-11 and Pool 3 is set for April 5-8.
