Hialeah, Horsemen Settle Purse Dispute

A settlement has been reached between Hialeah Park and the Florida Horsemen Benevolent and Protective Association in the dispute regarding underpayment of purses.

The FHBPA had filed suit against Hialeah, claiming that the track shortchanged horsemen by about $500,000 in 2000 purses. Hialeah management asserted that, if anything, purses were overpaid from the agreement reached in March 2000 with the horsemen.

No details of the settlement were released, except that Hialeah has agreed to increase the average daily overnight purses by $3,000 for the March 17-May 22 meet.

In filing the suit, the FHBPA threatened to withdraw its consent for Hialeah to send simulcasts if it was determined the track's purse contract with horsemen was void. The horsemen's group also alleged that Hialeah had failed to comply with a contract provision that the track would make its books and other business records concerning horsemen's accounts and purses available for inspection.
