TVG announced today that it would feature live on-location coverage of the 46th running of the Phoenix Gold Cup, Turf Paradise's $100,000 six furlong sprint for three year olds and upward, this weekend. Coverage from the Valley of the Sun will begin at 2 pm (EST) on Saturday, March 11 with TVG racing analyst and host, Caton Bredar live from Turf Paradise. Bredar will provide interviews with trainers, jockeys, owners and track personnel as well as in-depth analysis of events leading up to, during, and after the race.
"We are pleased to be able to bring our viewers a taste of the best racing in the Southwest with on-location coverage of this event from Turf Paradise," said Tony Allevato, TVG Vice President and Executive Producer. "Year in and year out, the Phoenix Gold Cup proves to be a very exciting race."
The 2001 Phoenix Gold Cup, which is historically one of the most significant races for sprinters in the Southwest, is likely to feature Hangonslewpyhangon, who placed second in this race last year and has been a standout over the years at the track. The Korey Owens trained entry of Classy Sheikh and Tavasco also figure to vie for favoritism. The venerable ten-year-old G Malleah, who won the Gold Cup in 1996, and set a world record of 1:06.60 for six furlongs at Turf Paradise, is also nominated to the race.
Past winners of the Phoenix Gold Cup include Honor the Hero, who won the race in 1993 and 1995, Answer Do, who won consecutive runnings of the race in 1991 and 1992, and the legendary Zany Tactics, who set the track on fire with a dominating world record performance in 1987.
