Primal Force Named 2000 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year

Primal Force, the only mare to produce two Breeders' Cup winners, has been named Kentucky Broodmare of the Year for 2000 by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders. Owned by Frank Stronach, Primal Force produced homebred Breeders' Cup winners Awesome Again and Macho Uno. The latter was named best 2-year-old male of 2000 by the organization.

Stronach, who won Eclipse Awards as top owner and breeder for 2000, bought Primal Force following her racing days, paying $95,000 for her at the 1992 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. Primal Force, a 5-year-old that year, was consigned by Robert N. Clay's Three Chimneys Farm.

Awesome Again was Primal Force's second foal and first Breeders' Cup winner. As a 4-year-old in 1998, the Ontario-bred son of Deputy Minister won the Classic (gr. I) over Silver Charm, Swain, Victory Gallop, Coronado's Quest, Skip Away, Running Stag, Touch Gold, Arch, and Gentlemen to complete a six-for-six season. As a 3-year-old, his big win came in the Queen's Plate Stakes (Can-IR) in only his third start. Retired with $4.3 million in earnings, Awesome Again finished second in Eclipse Award balloting for Horse of the Year and champion older male. He is standing his third season at Stronach's Adena Springs Kentucky near Midway.

Macho Uno, who was bred in the name of Adena Springs, won the 2000 Juvenile (gr. I) for his third win in four starts. He earned an Eclipse Award as best 2-year-old male and was assigned highweight of 126 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for males. Sired by Holy Bull, Macho Uno hasn't raced since the Juvenile because of bone-density immaturity.
He is at Adena Springs South near Ocala, Fla.

Primal Force, who was produced from the Mr. Prospector mare Prime Prospect, was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Bertram R. Firestone and raced for Mrs. Firestone. Trained by Bill Mott, she won four races and ran third twice from eight starts. In her only added-money start, she finished fifth in the Miss Woodford Breeders' Cup Handicap at Monmouth. Her final race was a month before her sale at Keeneland.

Fourteen-year-old Primal Force is the dam of five named foals and an unnamed Touch Gold yearling filly. Primal Force is in foal to El Prado and is due later this month. She is booked to Silver Charm. Touch Gold and El Prado stand at Adena Springs Kentucky.
Primal Force's yearling and her 2-year-old filly Just Awesome (by Siphon) are at Adena Springs South.
