Commission Puts Conditions on Delta Downs License

Though Delta Downs has secured a $7-million loan as payment for liens tied to construction work, the Louisiana State Racing Commission has ordered the track to submit a financial statement by Aug. 10 or risk loss of its license.

The American Press of Lake Charles, La., reported Thursday that the racing commission granted Delta Downs a racing license and 2002 racing dates. But operations at the track hinge upon submittal of the financial report.

The construction at the Vinton facility is tied to operation of slot machines. A gaming license is still pending.

Track president Shawn Scott told the racing commission Delta Downs cannot make a profit without slot machines. He also said the track could be sold, though officials at Wednesday's racing commission wouldn't comment.

Delta Downs, located not far from the Texas border, just concluded its mixed meet and now offers Quarter Horse racing.
