Songandaprayer, Millennium Wind Work Toward Derby 127

Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. I) winner Songandaprayer turned in his final workout for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) on Thursday when he worked 5/8 of a mile in :59 at Churchill Downs.

On the track following a maintenance break, Songandaprayer was ridden by exercise rider Jennifer Wolfe as he went in fractional splits of :24 2/5, for the first quarter-mile, :33 3/5 for three furlongs, and :47 for the half-mile. The son of Unbridled's Song galloped out six furlongs in 1:13. Trainer John Dowd timed the colt in :58 4/5 for the workout, with the opening eighth of a mile in "12 (seconds) and change."

"He was a little rank right before he started to work. Then he relaxed and it was easy work for him," Dowd said. "He did it very comfortably.

This is his last work going into the race." Dowd said jockey Aaron Gryder, who rode Songandaprayer to victory in last year's Huntington Stakes, will ride the colt in the Derby.

Millennium Wind, who has had a rash and a cracked hoof, was timed in 1:01 3/5 for his five furlong workout. Trainer David Hofmans timed him in splits of :12 2/5, :25 3/5. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:15. "It was a big work, nice and easy," Hofmans said. "He was very focused." Hofmans said he wanted the son of Cryptoclearance to "experience a long stretch."

Hofmans said Millennium Wind will have his final Derby tune-up next Tuesday, and he is uncertain if jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. will fly in for the work. Hofmans said Millennium Wind's cracked heel "is not painful and has not bothered him."

Among a large contingent of Derby horses that exercised Thursday were Thunder Blitz, who underwent a strong gallop, and Monarchos, who galloped about 1 1/8 miles. Monarchos is scheduled to work five-eighths of a mile Friday. Also galloping were probable Derby favorite Point Given, as well as Balto Star and Invisible Ink.
