Derby Crowd Second-Highest in History; Betting Sets Record

Amid sunny, hot, humid wearther, the second-largest crowd in Kentucky Derby history turned out at Churchill Downs on Saturday. The track reported attendance of 154,210, which susrpassed last year's 153,204. The largest crowd for the Derby was the 163,628 for the 100th renewal in 1974.

Churchill reported on-track for the Derby and the entire day each fell by 4%. A total of $8,360,273 was wagered at Churchill on the Derby and the day's card took in $17,680,813.

With the addition of off-track numbers, total handle on the Derby soared 9% to total $71.1 million and the Derby Day card handle totaled $107,361,641.
