Baird Tallies Dandy Double at Mountaineer

Hey, Dale, leave some for the rest of us!

That may have been the sentiment of some owners and trainers at Mountaineer Park Monday evening after horses owned and trained by Dale Baird took the top two spots in both stakes at the West Virginia track. His earnings from the two Memorial Day stakes were $93,324.

In the $58,525 Memorial Day Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at one mile, Nature and Boy Genius finished first and second. A third Baird entrant, Shackelford, checked in sixth as part of a three-horse entry. Nature was a private purchase by Baird this winter.

In the $58,125 Decoration Day Handicap for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, at one mile, Chelsie's House rallied on the outside to nose More Than Half at the wire. Chelsie's House was purchased by Baird at auction this winter, while More Than Half was a recent private purchase.

Both stakes had been scheduled for 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf, but all grass racing was canceled for the evening.

For the record, Baird, leading trainer at Mountaineer, also won a maiden special weight test on the card with Nutbush, who earned $10,904. For the night, Baird, who prefers to own the horses he trains, banked more than $104,000.
