TOC To Assist Backstretch Workers

The Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) announced a new program to financially assist backstretch employees, the California Thoroughbred Horsemen's Foundation.

The TOC will designate purse funds generated for one race at each meet, excluding fairs, throughout California to provide medical and dental care for backstretch workers through the clinics administered by CTHF. Most of the purse money from the designated races will accrue to the CTHF for the benefit of backstretch workers. The program is expected to generate in excess of $110,000 annually.

The foundation, which has two clinics in California, is funded primarily through a share of unclaimed, winning pari-mutuel tickets. The CTHF also receives financial support from all California racing associations, through their respective foundations, from the horsemen, through a share of purse money generated at fairs, and from individual donors.

The TOC program is expected to commence at the current Del Mar meeting and continue at all thoroughbred race meetings in the state through June of 2002.
