Ben Glass, racing manager for Dollar Bill's owner Gary West, said the decision to switch riders was no reflection on Day, who experienced a rash of bad racing luck on the colt. It was decided to try something different, and Chavez, one of the top riders in the country, was available. Day will continue ride other horses owned by West.
Trainer Dallas Stewart said Wednesday night that Jorge Chavez will replace Pat Day aboard Dollar Bill in the Aug. 25 Travers Stakes. Day, meanwhile, picked up the mount on Stonerside Stable's This Fleet is Due, who finished a fast-closing fourth, beaten 1 1/4 lengths, in the $1.5 Million Haskell Invitational Handicap. In another major Travers development, Gary Stevens will ride Jim Dandy winner Scorpion if Point Given doesn't run. Point Given's connections have not made a decision yet whether the son of Thunder Gulch will ship back to Saratoga. If he does, there is a flight from California the Tuesday before the Travers.
