Sweetest Thing Wins Breeders Stakes by 7 1/2 Lengths

Sweetest Thing earned her third victory in four career starts and her first stakes win in taking Saturday's Breeders Stakes at Woodbine by 7 1/2 lengths over Flaming Sky, a maiden Sky Classic colt. Sweetest Thing (Candy Stripes--Escape Reality, by Lear Fan) raced behind a three-horse duel for the lead then drew away to complete the 1 1/2 miles in 2:29.90 on firm turf.

Flaming Sky beat Asia for second by a neck, with Go Figure, Vie for Fame, and Fly Smartly completing the order of finish.

The odds-on favorite, Sweetest Thing returned $3.50, $2.80, and $2.10 for the win in the final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Flaming Sky, the highest price in the six-horse field at nearly 24-1, paid $10.60 and $4.20. Asia returned $2.20 to show. The exacta paid $51.90.

Bred in Ontario by Kingview Farms, Sweetest Thing is owned by M. Canino, W. Werner, and her trainer Roger Attfield. James Sean McAleney rode her to victory. (Chart, Equibase)
