Calder Boosts Purses to All-Time High

Calder Race Course announced Thursday that all overnight purses are being hiked 10 percent to an all-time high for the Miami-area track. The increase takes effect Friday, Aug. 24, according to the announcement by track president Ken Dunn andracing secretary Bob Umphrey.

While the daily average goes from $168,000 to $185,000 with the increase, when combined with stakes purses and breeders' enhancement funds, the new total average daily purse distribution will be approximately $225,000.

"We are pleased to announce this purse increase, which is the second of our season," said Dunn. "Calder is enjoying a resurgence in its on-track business this month versus the month of July, when several race cards were impacted by the weather. Additionally, a 3.5 percent increase in on-track attendance has contributed to our success. With the implementation of this increase, Calder's average daily outlay will be 20 percent higher than the racetrack's average in the year 2000. It is the largest purse distribution in Calder's history.

Calder previously increased overnight purses by 12 percent, which raised average daily purses from $150,000 to $168,000.
