Here and There in Saratoga--August 29, 2001

History Repeats:
Joe Palmer (Racing Editor for the now defunct New York Herald Tribune) noted some 60 years ago about the high cost of enjoying racing at Saratoga. Paraphrasing the late Mr. Palmer: "General Burgoyne didn't lose the Battle of Saratoga in 1777 on the battlefield. He just had his resources sapped by the citizenry of Saratoga Springs."

This tradition was still evident on Travers Day as parking rose from a normal $7 to $20 at the Wright Street lot, and from $8 to $25 in the private lot next to Siro's.

The descendants of those early settlers have carried on the tradition in grand style. (Still a bargain, though, is The Saratoga Special, a constant $1 per issue).

Name of the Day:
Vespers (eighth race). By Known Fact out of Sunday Service.

For those of you who might not be up on your religion (OK, we looked it up), a vesper is "an evening prayer or service." God bless you, owner/breeder Stuart Janney III.

We're not letting go of this one:
They don't even make the extra turn around the paddock for the Travers anymore. That makes us sad. How many times will we ever get a chance to see a horse like Point Given? Give the fans one more turn. Please.

Worth Repeating:
"The nice thing about him is you can switch him off when you want and he'll give it to you again. Any time."--Gary Stevens, on Point Given
