Officer Tops Del Mar Futurity Field

A field of seven, including The Thoroughbred Corp.'s impressive Officer, are set to compete in Wednesday's $250,000 Del Mar Futurity, the grade II feature on the closing-day card.

As one of two entries in the field, Officer will be joined by stablemate Ecstatic in the seven-furlong race restricted to 2-year-olds. Both are owned by The Thoroughbred Corp. and trained by meet leader Bob Baffert. The Futurity will be Officer's third outing at the meet. With victories in the Graduation Stakes and Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar, the colt is undefeated in three career starts. Undefeated Ecstatic will also be making his third start of the meet, having previously won a maiden race and an allowance test.

The other entry - Historic Speech and Striking Song - will run for the Fog City Stable of William Bianco and David Shimmon. Historic Speech, who broke his maiden earlier in the meet, is trained by D. Wayne Lukas. Maiden Striking Song is trained by Bob Hess, Jr.

The Futurity field, in post position order, consists of: Historic Speech, 115, Jose Valdivia; Kamsack, 115, Alex Solis; Metatron, 115, David Flores; Ecstatic, 117, Gary Stevens; Striking Song, 113, Corey Nakatani; Officer, 121, Victor Espinoza; Expected Program, 121, Tyler Baze.
