Fairplex Opens 63rd Meeting Today

The $50,000 Foothill Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs is the opening day feature as racing returns to the Los Angeles County Fair at Fairplex Park in Pomona today. At least one stakes race will be run on each of the 18 cards during the meet, which runs through Sept. 24. Stakes purse money will total $1.15 million.

The Foothill features highweights Coil N Strike and Way To The Top, who each will tote 122 pounds. All-time leading Fairplex rider Martin Pedroza is back to add to his totals at the meeting.

Topping the stakes calendar are three $100,000 events. The 9-furlong Ralph M. Hinds Pomona Invitational for 3-year-olds and up Sept. 23 honors the memory of the late president and chief executive of the Fair Association. The preceding day will see the running of the Pomona Derby for 3-year-olds at the nine-furlong distance. The Las Madrinas Handicap for fillies and mares 3-and-up will unfold over nine furlongs Sept. 21.

In addition, a pair of 6 1/2 furlong races for 2-year-olds sold at the Barretts Equine Sales Complex at Fairplex unfolds Sept. 15 and 16. The Barretts Debutante for fillies goes first, followed by the Barretts Juvenile for colts and geldings.

This will be the 63rd meeting at Fairlpex Park. More than $4 million in total purse money will be distributed.
