Vinnie Roe Wins Irish St. Leger

Seamus Sheridan's Vinnie Roe stretched out in distance from a seven-furlong race in his last start to win Saturday's 1 3/4-mile Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St. Leger (Ire-I) at the Curragh. The 3-year-old has now defeated older horses in each of his last three races.

Vinnie Roe completed the distance in 2:58 2/5 on good to firm turf and finished two lengths ahead of Millenary. Godolphin's Marienbard came home third, with Persian Punch fourth in the eight-horse field.

Irish-bred Vinnie Roe (Definite Article--Kayu, by Tap On Wood) won for the fifth time in ten career starts and was sent off at odds of 5-1. He is trained by Dermot Weld and was ridden to victory by Pat Smullen.
