Pedigree Analysis for Flute

Flute, who has likely already nailed down an Eclipse Award as the top 3-year-old filly of 2001, was bred to be a two-turn specialist. Even though this year's Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) will be contested around one bend at Belmont Park, the Juddmonte Farms' homebred Flute will have no trouble finding the 1 1/8-mile within her range. Her two grade I wins this year against 3-year-olds came at 1 1/8 miles (Kentucky Oaks) and 1 1/4 miles (Alabama Stakes).

Just as her potential Distaff rivals Serra Lake and Fleet Renee, Flute is a daughter of Seattle Slew, the last living Triple Crown winner. The sire of 98 stakes winners in his career, Seattle Slew ranks fifth among sires by all-time Breeders' Cup earnings. His sons and daughters have made 23 starts in Breeders' Cup races, and have registered a 2-4-3 slate with $4,085,000 in earnings.

His winners on racing's biggest day are 1992 Classic (gr. I) winner A.P. Indy and 1986 Juvenile (gr. I) winner Capote. Seattle Slew has been represented in all Breeders' Cup races except for the Turf (gr. IT). His memorable Distaff starters are Surfside, last year's runner-up at Churchill Downs, and Lakeway, who was third in 1995 at Belmont Park.

Flute is a second-generation homebred for Juddmonte Farms. Her dam, the stakes-winning Rougeur, was also bred by Juddmonte. Media Luna, Flute's third dam, was bred in England by Shutford Stud.

While only a winner of two races, Rougeur won a minor stakes on turf at Gulfstream Park and was graded stakes-placed on turf at both Gulfstream and Santa Anita. Flute is her third foal. Her second foal, Velvet Morning (a filly by Broad Brush), won the Palisades Stakes over the Keeneland turf course last year at three.

Flute's second dam, Media Luna (by Star Appeal), won only once in 11 starts, but was pitched high against her generation's best. She finished second in the 1 1/2-mile Gold Seal Oaks (Eng-I) and was third in another pair of group stakes. She is the dam of Eva Luna, who was named a champion older female in England. Media Luna is a half-sister to Honorius, who after racing in England, was a four-time leading sire in Australia (1976-79). Another of Media Luna's siblings, Suni, finished third in the 1978 Epsom Oaks. Media Luna died in 1994.
