Juvenile Pedigree Analysis: Officer

Pedigree (PDF format)

It must be said that Officer is rather modestly bred, particularly as concerns his female family, for the brilliance he has shown early in his racing career.

His sire, Bertrando, was a marvelous runner who has produced solid racehorses. Bertrando was Champion older male at 4 in 1993, when he captured the Pacific Classic (gr. I) and the Woodward Stakes (gr. I). He was sent off the favorite as part of a three-horse entry in that year's Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), and looked like a winner as the field turned for home. However, 133-1 longshot Arcangues collared him in the stretch, and Bertrando settled for second. Two years earlier, he was second to the brilliant run of Arazi in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).

Bertrando has sired stakes winners such as Smooth Player, Cliquoit, Here's To You, Queenie Belle, Stormy Jack, Lacquaria, and Scholars Studio. Bertrando, who earned better than $3 million lifetime, is a son of Skywalker, whose eight stakes victories included the 1986 Breeders' Cup Classic at 10-1. Skywalker earned $2.2 million in his career.

Officer's third dam, Splendid Ack Ack, produced Splendid Ann in 1984. The filly, by Raise A Man, won four stakes and became Champion older mare in South Africa in 1988 and 1989. Splendid Ann won 10 races from 15 lifetime starts. The same breeding produced Officer's second dam, Little Bar Fly, in 1985. Little Bar Fly captured the 1988 Vallejo Stakes at Golden Gate Fields, and is the dam of two stakes winners, Barfighter and Baby Barfly.

Officer's dam, St. Helen's Shadow, is by Septieme Ciel, a stakes-winning son of Seattle Slew.
