El Corredor Pedigree Profile

Pedigree (PDF format)

It's not hard to see where El Corredor gets his speed. The 4-year-old colt is by a sprinter and out of a mare by a sprinter. Of course it is not always that simple. The leader of the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) division, Kona Gold, has nothing but stamina influences in his family.

El Corredor, on the other hand, gets his speed honestly.

His sire, Mr. Greeley, is a grandson of Mr. Prospector -- El Corredor is inbred, 3x4, to Mr. Prospector -- who won five races at two and three up to a mile. His stakes wins were three sprints as a 3-year-old: the Lafayette (gr. III) and Swale Stakes (gr. III) at seven furlongs, and the Spectacular Bid Stakes (gr. III) over six furlongs. He also finished second in four stakes, most importantly for this discussion a neck defeat by the speedy filly Desert Stormer in the 1995 Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Mr. Greeley's female family has a top sprinter in it, his second dam, the Dancer's Image mare Lianga, a champion sprinter in France. She won France's premier sprint events, the Prix Jacques le Marois (Fr-I) and Prix Robert Papin (Fr-I).

El Corredor is out of the unraced mare Silvery Swan. He sire, Silver Deputy, made just two starts in Canada as a juvenile, but won them both: he broke his maiden by 6 1/2 lengths, then took the Swynford Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths.

Silver Deputy has gotten his share of horses that go a distance of ground, but he also has sired more than his share of sprinters, such as Canadian sprint champions Deputy Inxs and Scotzanna. He is also the sire of such well-known runners as dual Eclipse Award winner Silverbulletday and Canadian champions Archers Bay and Deputy Jane West.

This is a cross of a young sire and a broodmare sire who has only 49 producing dams. Nine-year-old Mr. Greeley is the sire of five stakes winners and daughters of Silver Deputy have produced six stakes winners.

Silvery Swan's first two foals are graded stakes winners. El Corredor is her first offspring; her second is Silver Tornado, a Maria's Mon filly who earlier this year won the 1 1/16 miles furlong Reeve Schley Jr. Stakes (gr. IIIT).

Silvery Swan has a 2-year-old full brother to El Corredor. She did not produce a foal this year but is in foal to Fusaichi Pegasus.

El Corredor is a grade I winner at a mile, thus it takes little imagination to see him shortening up to win a major six-furlong race such as the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
