Delaware Township raced his way into the Breeders' Cup Sprint with a victory in the Forest Hills.
Delaware Township won Belmont Park's $250,000 Forest Hills Handicap (gr. II) for the second straight year on Sunday to earn a spot in the Breeder's Cup Sprint (gr. I).

The 5-year-old horse by Notebook out of Sunny Mimosa, by Sunny North, beat Hook and Ladder by 3 1/4 lengths for his third win in four career tries at Belmont. Delaware Township, with 119 pounds and Eibar Coa aboard, covered six furlongs in 1:09.49 on the fast track to earn $150,000 for New Farm. The win was the third in seven starts this year for Delaware Township and his 10th in 19 career starts. Mr. & Mrs. Harry Bono bred Delaware Township.

"The track had been dead today; the fractions had been slow all day," trainer Ben Perkins Jr. said. "When the pace was that slow, he was able to get himself into good position. With the small field, it's easier for him to get out and be clear. When I saw where he was at the half-mile pole, I was pretty confident from there."

Delaware Township returned $4.90, $2.80, and $2.10. Hook and Ladder paid $5.30 and $2.70 and Yonaguska paid $2.10. Peeping Tom and Disco Rico completed the order of finish. The winning exacta combination returned $21.60.

The win marks the second graded stakes win on the card for Coa, who earlier guided Sunray Spirit to victory in the Cowdin Stakes (gr. III). (Chart, Equibase)
