Jockey Richard Migliore sent Iron Deputy to the lead in mid-stretch in the field of eight. Volley Ball finished second, with Mr. Kipp another half-length behind. Saratoga Way, R B's Boy, Harmony Hall, J's Wild Slew, and Parfy's Legacy completed the order of finish.Iron Deputy (Silver Deputy--Femme De Fer, by Iron Duke), carrying 116 pounds, covered the six furlongs in 1:10.34 on a fast track. The winner earned $49,500 for John and Susan Moore."He's got the ability and the brains," said Migliore. "He's got no problem getting in behind horses and having dirt kicked in his face. He got real aggressive on the turn and I was very confident coming into the stretch. I've liked him since the first day I got on him. He lets you place him where you need to."
"I think this horse can go long," said winning trainer James Jerkens. "He showed today he's very rateable. He'll stay in training over the winter, but I won't over race him. I don't like to stretch them out right away, especially when they get a late start like this horse had. The winter would be a good time to stretch him out; the fields might be a little easier and the weather could help. We might have something here."Iron Deputy, the favorite, returned $5.80, $3, and $2.70. Volley Ball paid $3.60 and $3.40 and Mr. Kipp $8. The winning exacta combination paid $23.20. (Chart, Equibase)
