The series, which traced the ups and downs of life on Maryland's oldest Thoroughbred farm, was honored with an Eclipse Award for outstanding magazine writing. It was the second such award for Pons, who won his first Eclipse in 1981 while working as a staff writer for The Blood-Horse. After leaving The Blood-Horse, Pons earned a degree at the University of Kentucky law school and returned to Bel Air, Md., to help manage the family owned Country Life Farm.

The Blood-Horse published Country Life Diary in book form in 1992, with a second, revised edition printed in 1999.
