Jockey Iggy Puglisi suffered several injuries in a fall at Los Alamitos Racetrack Saturday night. According to his agent, Richie Silverstein, 26-year-old Puglisi broke three vertebrae and bones in his right knee.
The incident occurred during the fourth race on a rainy night at Los Alamitos when Puglisi's mount, Corwyn Belle, fell on the wet fast track soon after the start precipitating Fresh Currency to fall over Corwyn Belle, according to Equibase charts. A Los Alamitos press release reports Corwyn Belle tripped over Fresh Currency. Baltazar Contreras, who rode French Currency, was not injured in the spill.
Silverstein said Puglisi was hospitalized at Los Alamitos Medical Center but remained awake and lucid. No surgery was anticipated, awaiting further diagnostic tests to be performed Sunday.
Corwyn Belle, the 4-5 favorite in the 4 1/2-furlong dash, was claimed out of the race for $5,000 by Willam R. Cory.
