Churchill Downs Inc. announced Jan. 4 the hiring of two people to fill new positions within the company. Michael W. Anderson, has been appointed vice president of corporate finance, for CDI, and Mary Ann Guenther has been named corporate counsel and assistant secretary for the company. Anderson will report to Michael E. Miller, CDI's senior vice president of finance, while Guenther will continue to report to Rebecca Reed, the company's senior vice president, general counsel and secretary. Anderson will continue to oversee CDI's internal and external financial reporting as well as annual profit and capital planning and forecasting. He will also coordinate tax return preparation and external audits for the company....John C. Sperrywas appointed to the California Horse Racing Board. Sperry is President of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Union, Local 324, where he has worked since 1959. He holds horse racing licenses in California, Arizona, and New Mexico....The Jockey Club reminds owners and breeders that a valid attempt to name foals of 2000 must be made by February 1, 2002, to avoid a $50 late fee. The Jockey Club again has published on its web site a list of 41,835 Thoroughbred names released from active use on Jan. 1. Accessible through the "Name A Thoroughbred" icon at http://home.jockeyclub.com, the list of released names is updated daily to remove names as they are claimed....Forgotten at the Finish Line, which aired Feb. 14, 2001, on WTVI-TV in Charlotte, N.C., has won the Eclipse Award for Local Television. Steve Crump produced and hosted the hour-long documentary about African Americans' contributions to horse racing as jockeys, trainers and owners. Crump will be honored at the Eclipse Award ceremonies Feb. 18 in Hollywood, Fla....After final tallies and the conclusion of its West Coast sale of stallion seasons, the benefit held by Thoroughbred Charities of America concluded with more than $1.4-million raised for Thoroughbred retirement and research. The sale-topper was a $76,000 no-guarantee season to Taylor Made Farm stallion Unbridled Song donated by Paraneck Stable. In the art and memorabilia portion of the auction, a life-sized horse painted by artist Shawn Faust fetched a top bid of $20,000. ... Philadelphia Park's racing secretary, Ed Vomacka, has been hired as the director of racing/racing secretary at Beulah Park in Ohio. Before he took the job at Philly Park, Vomacka was racing secretary at Garden State Park and Atlantic City Race Course. Sal Sinatra , director of racing at Philly Park, took over for Vomacka as racing secretary the first week of January.
