Sakhee Tops International Classifications

Horses who ran in the United States in 2001 head the three main categories in the European-organized International Classifications, which were released in England on Wednesday.

Johannesburg, trained by Aidan O'Brien in Ireland and winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), is the top-rated 2-year-old. He was weighted at 126 pounds, four more than Hawk Wing and Queen's Logic. The assessments for 2-year-olds are limited to horses who ran or were trained in Europe, so American-trained juveniles were not considered. Johannesburg is one of three finalists for the Eclipse Award for male juveniles.

On the 3-year-old classification, dual classic winner Point Given led the way at 130 pounds. Point Given is the only unanimous Eclipse Award winner (the finalists were announced Jan. 10). The O'Brien-trained Galileo, winner of two European Derbys, was assigned 129 pounds, with Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Squirtle Squirt in third place at 126 pounds. The 3-year-old and older horse categories includes horses who have raced or been trained in Europe, North America, and Japan.

The older horse classification is led by Sakhee, runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), at 133 pounds, with Godolphin stable companion Fantastic Light, winner of the Breeders' Cup Turf, at 129 pounds. Tiznow, who defeated Sakhee in the Classic, was assigned five pounds less than the topweight, 128 pounds.

Johannesburg, Point Given, and Tiznow are the three finalists for the North American Horse of the Year.
