Derby Watch--Week 2 (Cont.)

21 -- Werblin/Eduardo Inda; Unbridled's Song-Roll Over Baby, by Rollin on Over

We'll get a good idea how good he is after the San Vicente. Coming off a sharp 6-furlong work in 1:12. With such an obscure female family, he must have looked awesome to bring $850,000 as a yearling. Looks like a good deal so far following two impressive scores in only two starts. Now for the important stretch out.

22 -- Sky Terrace/Vickie Foley; Skywalker-I Aim High, by I Enclose

Ran a super race in Lecomte, getting bounced around from both sides coming out of the gate, then fighting hard most of the way, only to be nipped on the wire by Easyfromthegitgo. Has a DI of 4.60, but has stamina in female family. He'll have to learn to take back off the pace if he's to be a serious Derby contender.

23 -- Axis/Elliott Walden; Saint Ballado-Moscow Tap, by Moscow Ballet

Breezed 5 furlongs in 1:04 2/5 at Payson Park. His last two races were brilliant, but needs to stretch out soon. He hasn't been farther than six furlongs, and Walden isn't convinced he wants to go long. Granddam in tail-female family is half-sister to Go for Gin.

24 -- Danthebluegrassman/Bob Baffert; Pioneering-Stay With Bruce, by Grey Dawn II

We have no idea how good this colt is. As Baffert pointed out, his two stakes wins were at Golden Gate. Sire is by Mr. Prospector, out of a Secretariat mare. Outgamed a good colt in Cappuchino last time out, and will try for a trio of Northern California stakes wins when he heads back up for the El Camino Real Derby.

25 -- It'sallinthechase /Wilson Brown; Take Me Out-Limestone Landing, by Red Ryder

Fanned 5-wide in Lecomte and was flying through final furlong to finish third, beaten 3/4 of a length. Has shown good closing kick at distances from 5 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles. Not sure about his pedigree, as too many obscure names in female family; but does have 1.67 DI.

26 -- Blue Burner/Bill Mott; French Deputy-Haiati, by Alydar

Breezing steadily at Payson Park; put in a sharp half in :50 in most recent work. May head right into Fountain of Youth. Undefeated, but we'll know more about him after he faces tougher competition.

27 -- Bob's Image/ Dallas Stewart; Halo's Image-Gray Flannel, by Darn That Alarm

Breezed half in :50 in first work back after Fair Grounds allowance score. Following 9-length maiden score, he defeated the talented Robe by 2 1/2 lengths in 1 mile and 40-yard allowance race.

28 -- Sunday Break/Neil Drysdale; Forty Niner-Catequill, by Storm Cat

Looked very strong drawing off in 7-furlong maiden race in good time. Had a ton of trouble in previous start. Now looks ready to make a name for himself. It will be tight making the Derby, and you can bet Drysdale won't push him. Definitely looks to have a bright future.

29 -- Shah Jehan /D. Wayne Lukas; Mr. Prospector-Voodoo Lily, by Baldski

Not sure he wants to go 1 1/4 miles, but he's been handling the dirt well in his works and has run some good races in Europe. Big question mark, but Lukas feels he's been improving steadily.

30 -- Traditional/D. Wayne Lukas; Gone West-Miraloma, by Deputy Minister

Another with a lot of catching up to do, but he did out-duel a tough opponent in Battler Bob, stretching out in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race. Should continue to improve, but has only two career starts.

KNOCKING ON THE DOOR: WHITE FLAME, recently purchased and turned over to Niall O'Callaghan, ran very gamely to win 1 1/16-mile Gulfstream allowance Jan. 26 after battling most of the way for third straight victory on dirt. Second horse, SAY NO MAW, was 6 lengths ahead of third-place finisher. PEEKSKILL, second to High Star, developing into nice horse for Tony Reinstedler; good back-up right now for Stephentown. Undefeated CASHEL CASTLE will bear watching in Feb. 2 Hutcheson Stakes. Dave Hofmans pointing DEFINITE EDGE for Sham Stakes Feb. 8; likely will face Baffert's recent allowance winner HAWK'S TOP GUN. Team Valor's ONTHEDEANSLIST has gotten over his illness and will point for the Golden State Mile Feb. 10. Hopeful winner CAME HOME running in San Vicente, but connections say he'll stay at shorter distances.
