Portland Meadows, leased by Magna Entertainment, has no signed document with the Environmental Protection Agency for the surface-water removal plan. The EPA last year expressed concerns about runoff into the nearby Columbia Slough. A Magna official told the Oregonian the $750,000 project will commence when the stable area is vacated.
The current meet at Portland Meadows in Oregon will end Feb. 10--36 days before its scheduled conclusion--in light of an ongoing problem with surface-water removal at the racetrack.The Oregonian newspaper reported that horsemen must be off the grounds by Feb. 15. Simulcasting is expected to continue, and racing officials in the state said an attempt will be made to make up some dates at another facility this year.
