Cellars Shiraz Pays $39 for Herecomesthebride Stakes Win

Longshot Cellars Shiraz defeated favored August Storm by 1 1/4 lengths to win the $100,000 Herecomesthebride Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Gulfstream Park.

With the graded stakes win Cellars Shiraz proved a better vintage then her full brothers Cellars Merlot and Cellars Beaujolais, and half-siblings Cellars Gold and Cellars Chardonnay, none of whom has won a stakes race to date. Cellars Shiraz also has a 2-year-old full sister, the unraced Cellars Kiss.

She's Vested was third, two lengths behind the favored runner-up, August Storm. Dame Sylvieguilhelm, Lush Soldier, Ashlee's Royal, Kathy K D, Sarah With an H, Another Storm, and Ms Brookski completed the order of finish.

Bitterroot Investments Inc.'s homebred Cellars Shiraz, ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.21 on good turf and paid $39.40, $15, and $8.40. August Storm paid $5.60 and $4.40. She's Vested, a 27-1 shot, paid $12.80 to show. The winning exacta combination returned $206.40.

Cellars Shiraz is a Florida-bred daughter of Kissin Kris trained by William Cesare. The filly raced exclusively at Calder as a 2-year-old, breaking her maiden in her sixth start. The $60,000 winner's share of the purse increased her earnings from $61,680 to $121,680. She has won three of her 12 starts and has finished in the money eight times. (Chart, Equibase)
