Monarchos Settles in at Claiborne

Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Monarchos arrived at the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky. on the morning of Feb. 7 to begin his new career as a stallion.

"He was fresh as could be and looks beautiful," said manager Gus Koch. "He has been turned out in his paddock."

Millionaire Monarchos, who will be housed in the same stall once occupied by 1972 Kentucky Derby winner Riva Ridge, won the Derby in the second-fastest winning time ever, 1:59.97, for John Oxley. Four-year-old Monarchos (Maria's Mon--Regal Band, by Dixieland Band) will begin his stallion career for $25,000 live foal. Oxley will retain about a 40% interest and the remainder will be syndicated and managed by Claiborne,
