Azeff Still in Coma, But Beginning to Respond

Assistant trainer Yvonne Azeff, who has been in a coma since suffering a severe head injury in a spill at Gulfstream on Jan. 27, has begun to show progress over the past 24 hours, trainer John Ward Jr. said.

"She's still in a coma, but in the past 24 hours she's started to respond," Ward said. "It's not anything great, but definitely better than it was. She's starting to react to things. One of my assistants went to visit her last night and got down real close to her, and she touched him on the end of his nose.

"She's been taken off the ventilator and moved from intensive care to a neurological unit. As of now, it's too early to tell if there has been any brain damage. We're all just hoping she can come to in the next couple of days."

Azeff, 41, suffered her injury after being thrown from her pony and pinned beneath him, suffering a severe whiplash to the head.
