Immediate plans call for Siphonic, who was purchased for $210,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale in 2000, to start next in the March 17 San Felipe S. (gr. II) and then use the April 6 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) as a springboard to the May 4 Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Siphonic is expected to work again next Saturday at Hollywood Park, according to Hofmans. The Kentucky-bred son of Siphon has banked $733,978 with a career line of 5-3-1-1. He won last year's Hollywood Futurity (gr. I), Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (gr. II) and was third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).
By Margaret RansomAmerman Racing Stable's Triple Crown hopeful Siphonic worked four furlongs in an easy :50 3/5 over a fast track at Hollywood Park Sunday, his first morning drill since finishing second after a troubled break in the Santa Catalina S. (gr. II) at Santa Anita on Jan. 19. Regular exercise rider Michelle Jensen was in the saddle for trainer David Hofmans, who was pleased with the colt's move. "That's all I wanted," Hofmans said, "a nice, easy open gallop."
