Siphonic breezed four furlongs in an easy :50 3/5 over a fast track at Hollywood Park last week in what was his first morning drill since finishing second after a troubled break in the Jan 19. Santa Catalina S. (gr. II) at Santa Anita. The Kentucky-bred son of Siphon is still on schedule to start next in the March 17 San Felipe S. (gr. II) at Santa Anita, followed by the April 6 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) before heading to Louisville for a probable start in the May 4 Run for the Roses. Siphon's career line stands at three wins from five starts, with a second and a third, for earnings of $733,978. He won last year's Hollywood Futurity (gr. I), Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (gr. II) and was third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).
by Margaret RansomTrainer David Hofmans revealed that early Kentucky Derby (gr. I) favorite Siphonic spiked a slight fever on Friday, causing the conditioner to push back the colt's scheduled Saturday work a day or two. The good news is that the Amerman Racing Stables colorbearer missed just one day of training and was back on the track Saturday morning. "He spiked a slight temperature (Friday)," Hofmans said, "so he jogged this morning. I think he'll work maybe (Sunday) or the next day."
