Three-year-old Jump Start (A.P. Indy--Steady Cat, by Storm Cat) suffered a career-ending injury in the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Surgery was performed to repair a condylar fracture in his left front cannon bone after the injury and an arthrodesis was performed Feb. 9 to fuse the ankle joint. Dr. Robert Copelan felt the arthrodesis was successful and the heeling is proceeding uneventfully, but feels it is in the colt's best interest to skip the current breeding season.
William T. Young's Overbrook Farm announced that homebred grade II winner Jump Start will not stand at stud this year at the Lexington nursery as planned and instead will begin his stallion career in 2003. His fee was announced at $5,000 live foal.
