Fonner Park, which cancelled due to inclement weather and a sub-zero wind chill, will also reamin open for simulcasting. The Grand Island, Nebraska track is set to resume live racing on Friday.
Citing frigid temperatures, management at Sportsman's Park cancelled live racing Monday. Racing at the Illinois track is scheduled to resume Tuesday.On Sunday, Sportman's,Oaklawn Park, Turfway Park, Blue Ribbon Downs and Fonner Park all cancelled live racing Sunday due to weather-related track conditions.Oaklawn Park general manager Eric Jackson explained the weather conditions in Arkansas which forced the cancellation."The track had already frozen by midnight and, in spite of all-night efforts by our track crew, we were unable to keep it from freezing to a depth of at least two inches around the entire track," said Eric Jackson, Oaklawn's general manager. "We needed increased temperatures in the area early to have a chance to thaw out the surface, but that did not materialize. By 10 o'clock this morning, the temperature was still below 20 degrees and a pretty stiff northerly breeze kept any thawing from taking place."The track will remain open for simulcast wagering."Our main concern in running live races is the safety of the horses and humans involved, and none of us want to risk any life and limb under such dangerous circumstances." Jackson said.Racing will resume at the Arkansas track on Wednesday.
