Kris S. Taken Out of Stallion Service

Prominent Central Kentucky stallion Kris S. was relieved of stallion duty two weeks ago at Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner's WinStar Farm near Versailles because of cervical pain. The 25-year-old syndicated stallion has impregnated six of 10 mares.

"He experienced a sudden neck pain when he was breeding a mare," said farm official Doug Cauthen. "It's more like a pinch nerve. He is responding to treatment under the care of Dr. Doug Byars, and is at the farm. He is comfortable, but is experiencing pain and is not 100%."

Kris S. was examined for spinal ataxia at Hagyard-Davidson- McGee veterinary clinic near Lexington. He failed to show any of the symptoms associated with that ailment. According to Cauthen, Kris S.'s case is nothing like what Seattle Slew has experienced. Seattle Slew underwent spinal surgery March 2 to relieve pressure on his vertebrae.

WinStar has not placed a date for Kris S.'s return to stallion service.

Kris S. (Roberto--Sharp Queen, by Princequillo) has sired 62 stakes winner, including Breeders' Cup (gr. I) winners Brocco, Hollywood Wildcat, Prized, and Soaring Softly. Kris S. entered stud in Florida in 1982 and was moved to Prestonwood Farm (now WinStar) for the 1994 season.
