Personal Reward, Monthir Prep for Florida Derby Day

Lee Lewis' homebred Personal Reward and Shadwell Stable's Monthir were on track Sunday morning in preparation for their respective starts on Saturday's Florida Derby card at Gulfstream Park. Monthir will go in the seven-furlong Swale Stakes (gr. III), with Personal Reward set to make his first stakes start in the $1 million Florida Derby (gr. I).

Maiden and allowance winner Personal Reward went five furlongs in 1:02 1/5 at Gulfstream for trainer Mark Hennig.

"I wanted him to go in about 1:01 and change or 1:02 and he gave me what I asked him for," Hennig said, "I had him finishing the last three eighths in :35 3/5 and had him galloping out in 1:14 change. I'll just give him maintenance work from now to the race and I'm very happy with the way he's coming into the race."

Personal Reward is undefeated at Gulfstream after finishing fourth in both his juvenile starts during the Belmont Park spring/summer meet. The chestnut son of Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Personal Hope is out of the Miswaki mare Taylor's Mark.

Hennig also conditions Monthir, who has yet to win outside the maiden ranks, though he did finish second in the Nashua (gr. II) and Hutcheson (gr. III) stakes. Monthir went a half-mile in :47 1/5, breezing.

"It was a good workout, and I'm happy with the way he's been training," said Hennig. "The Swale on Saturday will be his next start."
