Taylor Made will continue to offer its own consignments at sales in addition to participating in the Paramount venture, according to Mark Taylor.
Taylor Made Sales Agency, one of the largest consignors in the Thoroughbred auction business has expanded the scope of its operations. And so has Gaines-Gentry Thoroughbreds, which made its mark selling weanlings, but is now focusing more on yearling auctions.In a letter to its clients dated March 8, Taylor Made announced that it is a partner in Paramount Sales, which also involves Gaines-Gentry Thoroughbreds, Dr. Tony Ryan's Castleton Lyons farm, and Pat Costello of Drumkenny Farm. Advertising that lists all four partners appears in the March 16 issue of The Blood-Horse.In its debut, Paramount was the leading consignor in terms of gross expenditures at inaugural Keeneland October yearling sale in 2001, selling seven horses for $907,000. Paramount also sold the sale-topping horse, a $400,000 Pleasant Colony--La Paz colt.Paramount originally was introduced to the public as a joint venture between Costello and Gabriel Duignan, the president of Castleton Lyons. Taylor Made and Gaines-Gentry chose to remain "low key" partners during the company's launch, but their involvement was no secret to many sale regulars, according to Mark Taylor."We think there is a lot to be gained by expanding your base and your dealings with other industry leaders, who in some ways could even be perceived as competitors at times.," Taylor said. "By dealing with those industry leaders a lot more avenues open up. By doing business together and learning more about each other, there is a lot of synergy that is created and a lot of sharing of information."Last year, Taylor Made was the top consignor, in terms of gross receipts, at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale and the Keeneland July and Saratoga select yearling. It ranked second at the Keeneland September yearling sale and third at the Keeneland November breeding stock auction.
