A U.S. Marine, Turner was a World War II veteran. He ran the Western Outfitters store in Winston-Salem. He was also involved with the North Carolina Thoroughbred Racing Action Committee (NCTRACK).
Herbert L. Turner, an avid owner and breeder in North Carolina, died March 8 at the age of 72 in Winston-Salem due to a heart ailment. The horses he bred and owned in North Carolina mainly competed on the Maryland circuit. His biggest success came with 1981 stakes winner Round Table Top. Bred and owned by Turner, Round Table Top (Secondary Market -- Fondly, by Tilt Top) won the Ruidoso Thoroughbred Derby and placed in two other stakes in New Mexico before finishing his campaign on the East Coast.
