Skymarc Farm's Julie Jalouse was making her first North American start and her first start for trainer Christophe Clement. The daughter of the Lomond mare Julie La Rousse won two of seven races in Ireland as a 3-year-old while trained by John Oxx. She earned $120,000 for Sunday's win, her third in eight starts and second in a stakes race. It was Clement's fourth straight win in the Orchid. Julie Jalouse rallied from fifth-place under jockey Jose Santos to nip 13-10 favorite Sweetest Thing at the wire to win Sunday's $200,000 Orchid Handicap (gr. IIT) at Gulfstream Park. The 4-year-old daughter of Kris S. completed the 1 1/2 miles in 2:25.89 on firm turf.Refugee set an honest pace under Jorge Chavez as Sweetest Thing settled in fourth, just ahead of Julie Jalouse. 110-pound low-weight Refugee continued to lead by a length over Tap Dance after 1 1/4 miles run in 2:01.40 as Sweetest Thing moved into contention 1 1/2 lengths back. Sweetest Thing moved up in the stretch as Refugee dug in gamely with Julie Jalouse about three lengths off the leader. Sweetest Thing wrested a short lead from Refugee late before Julie Jalouse rallied to the outside to earn the neck-length win in deep stretch.Sweetest Thing finished a half-length ahead of third-place Refugee, with Tap Dance two lengths farther back in fourth.
