Funds Raised for Azeff in Charity Softball Game

More than $3,200 was raised for injured trainer Yvonne Azeff Tuesday night during a jockey versus media softball game in South Florida. The jockeys won the game 13 to 6.

Azeff, assistant trainer to John Ward Jr., was seriously injured at Gulfstream this winter. The 50-50 chances brought in $1,410, and Megan Connolly, of Gulfstream Park's communications department, had the winning ticket. She quickly donated her $705 winnings back to Yvonne. Auctions for various racing books were also held to raise money for Yvonne.

Organizers included Mike Tanner and Michele Blanco of the Florida Turf Writers and Media Association; writer Frank Carlson; Chaplain Tom LaPointe, whose staff served up hot dogs and sodas; Gulfstream president Scott Savin, who filled in behind the plate calling balls and strikes; trainer Danny Perlswig, who umpired in the field; and jockey Jose Ferrer and assistant clerk of scales Victor Sanchez, who organized the jockeys.
